Russia is attempting to deepen its economic and diplomatic ties with China and the Global South to allow it to challenge the international financial system dominated by the U.S. and to undermine the West, the Washington Post reported.

UK Defense Ministry: Avdiivka unlikely to fall into Russian hands in coming weeks. Despite Russian attempts to bypass Avdiivka’s defenses, Ukrainian defenders are likely to defend the city at least for the coming weeks, the U.K. Defense Ministry said in its intelligence report on Jan. 27.

Military intelligence claims cyberattack on IT company providing services to Russian defense industry. Ukraine’s military intelligence agency (HUR) launched a cyber attack against the Moscow-based IPL Consulting company, which provides services to the Russian heavy industry and military-industrial complex, the agency said on Jan. 27.

Taiwan has become the biggest exporter of metalworking equipment to Russia during the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, a new joint investigation by the Russian independent media The Insider and Taiwanese The Reporter, published on Jan. 27, revealed.

​​Governor: 5 bodies found under rubble of destroyed building in Donetsk Oblast. The bodies of five people were removed from the rubble of a destroyed house in the village of Niu-York in Donetsk Oblast, Governor Vadym Filashkin reported on Jan. 27.

Russian sabotage group kills brother, sister in Sumy Oblast. Sumy Oblast officials said that the house of the two victims lies in the village of Andriivka, located within the five-kilometer border zone.

Russian drones kill 1, injure 1 in Kherson Oblast’s Beryslav. Russian drones dropped explosives on Beryslav, Kherson Oblast, on the morning of Jan. 27, killing a man, Governor Oleksandr Prokudin said.

Russian attack on Kherson Oblast injures man. A Russian attack on the village of Tiahynka in Kherson Oblast injured a man on Jan. 27, the Kherson Oblast Military Administration reported. The 66-year-old was reportedly hospitalized with shrapnel wounds.

Governor: 13-year-old girl dies in hospital following Russian attack on Kharkiv Oblast. A 13-year-old girl died in hospital after being injured in the Russian air attack on the village of Malyi Burluk, near Kupiansk, on Jan. 17, Kharkiv Oblast Governor Oleh Syniehubov reported on Jan. 27.

International response

White House confirms Biden, Scholz to meet in Washington in February. U.S. President Joe Biden is due to meet German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Feb. 9 in Washington, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said on Jan. 27.

Telegraph: US to deploy nuclear weapons in UK to counter Moscow’s threat. The U.S. plans to station nuclear weapons in the U.K. for the first time in years amid growing tensions between NATO and Russia, The Telegraph reported on Jan. 26, citing Pentagon documents it had obtained.

CNN: Key US senators agree on border-Ukraine aid deal, to be unveiled next week. U.S. Senate negotiators had agreed on a deal that significantly restricts illegal migrant crossing at the southern border while also unblocking assistance for Ukraine, CNN reported on Jan. 26, citing undisclosed sources.

Kuleba: Ukraine, Lithuania agree on joint drone production. Ukraine and Lithuania have determined joint steps in scaling up drone production for Ukraine’s Armed Forces, Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said during the press conference with his Lithuanian counterpart, Gabrielius Landsbergis, in Kyiv on Jan. 27.

SBU uncovers mass fraud in weapons procurement. Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) announced on Jan. 27 the discovery of a corruption scheme related to the procurement of almost 100,000 mortar shells, amounting to nearly $40 million.
